Zachęcona artystycznym i komercyjnym sukcesem progresywnej części albumu Ummagumma, grupa postanowiła skomponować wielkie dzieło symfoniczne - rodzaj opus magnum. Współpracując z kompozytorem Ronem Geesinem, skomponowali 23-minutową suitę na orkiestrę, chór i grupę rockową. Kompozycja zatytułowana Atom Heart Mother ukazała się na stronie A albumu o tym samym tytule. Dla wielu fanów grupy Atom Heart Mother jest szczytowym osiągnięciem grupy, dla innych ślepym zaułkiem.

Druga strona płyty bliższa jest głównemu nurtowi psychodelicznego rocka. Trzy utwory: If Watersa, Summer 68 Wrighta i Fat Old Sun Gilmoura są przykładem solidnych psychodelicznych, balansujących na granicy progresywności kompozycji.

Zamykający płytę, trzynastominutowy utwór Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast jest żartem muzycznym. Utwór składa się z kilkunastu krótkich instrumentalnych przejść przerwanych nagranym procesem przygotowywania śniadania przez jednego z inżynierów dźwięku Pink Floyd. Utwór kończył się dźwiękiem spadających kropli wody ze zbyt słabo zakręconego kranu. Dźwięk ostatniej kropli został zapisany na zamykającej ścieżce winylowej płyty tak, że mógł być odtwarzany w nieskończoność. Tego efektu niestety nie udało się odtworzyć na CD.

Płytę rozpoczyna "One of These Days". Kompozycja na tyle dobra, że zespół odgrywał ją jeszcze na swoich ostatnich koncertach w 1996 roku. Konstrukcja utworu oparta jest na oryginalnie nałożonych liniach gitary basowej (przy pomocy włoskiego delaya Binson Echorec) oraz na technice gitarowej "slide". Ciekawie brzmią również frazy organów odtworzone od końca (pomysł Wrighta). Funkcję wokalisty po raz pierwszy i jak dotąd ostatni objął Nick Mason, mówiąc tylko jedno osobliwe zdanie: "Pewnego dnia rozszarpię Cię na kawałki".

Na uwagę zasługują również kunsztownie opracowane ballady "A Pillow Of Winds" i "Fearless". Natomiast nijakie i niestarannie dopracowane muzycznie "San Tropez" i "Seamus" można sobie darować.

Najważniejszym utworem na płycie jest "Echoes" trwający 23 minuty. Jest to owoc wysiłków całego zespołu. Gilmourowi i Wrightowi zawdzięczamy bogactwo wątków melodycznych, harmonii i barw, natomiast zasługą Masona i Watersa jest inteligentna, choć swobodna konstrukcja. Całość to przepiękna, oniryczna suita, dzieło ponadczasowe, perła wśród pojedynczych kompozycji Pink Floyd. Muzyka dopracowana jest w najdrobniejszym szczególe. "Echoes" w niesamowity sposób pobudza wyobraźnię, a tekst (spojrzenie na świat z niezwykłej perspektywy, spod wody, z dna morskiego) znakomicie współgra z muzyką. Jeszcze później przez długie lata wiele zespołów będzie wzorowało się na pomysłach zapoczątkowanych w "Echoes".
