Spoiler:
Rhythm and Blues took on many styles and faces during its heyday of the late 40s and early 50s. Ex-jazzmen scaled down their bands to 5 or 6 piece combos, working as jump instrumental groups or with a stand up vocalist, later replaced by a vocalist and guitar player; quartet vocal groups with roots in the church, or on the street corner, the rural wandering down-home blues men who played either guitar or harmonica, the young urban black teenager who entered talent competitions singing the latest rustic hits.
During the thriving early post-war years Los Angeles, like other urban areas in the USA, became involved in the indie record business, and some of the most important companies in the rhythm and blues field were established, including Exclusive, Aladdin, Modern and Specialty, Jake Porter's Combo label entered the foray at the start of the 50s. Porter had a long carrer in the music business as a trumpet/cornet player going back to the early 30s, working with important jazz orchestras, including Lionel Hampton, Benny Carter, Fletcher Henderson and Benny Goodman. At the end of World War II Porter became a leading light and an in-demand session man and arranger along with Maxwell Davis, working on countless sessions for the leading indies in Los Angeles. His fine work can be heard on many recordings by such luminaries as T-Bone Walker, Joe Turner, Lloyd Glenn and Jimmy Witherspoon.
